Let's tell the convention by your shots

HEATH FLETCHER:

Life is a delicate balancing act between the necessities of earning a living
while maintaining a healthy lifestyle and following the dreams that motivate
us. Is it possible to accomplish this without sacrificing our personal and
professional fulfillment?

Husband and wife team, Heath and Carolyn Fletcher have taken on the
challenge of balancing family life alongside their art-inspired wedding and
portrait business Bliss Photographic Inc. While concentrating on the
wedding market, they blended their photographic talents with graphic design
giving them a commercial edge. Then by fashioning their shared workspace
into a collective Fine Art Photography Gallery they managed to have the
diversity to reach three major niches in the photographic industry.

Drawing from their experiences you will see how branding your business is a
dynamic tool that will help you define your goals and gain recognition in a
competitive industry. See how their marketing strategies have evolved along
with their products and services as they integrate new technologies and
creative ideas.

Heath & Carolyn¹s priority of family have shaped their business operations
opening doors to many life adventures and self proclaimed business success.
Success, after all, can only be measured against the original goals you have
set for yourself and your business.

DAVE MONTIZAMBERT:

Dave Montizambert will share his insight of owning, building, and balancing a photographic career with the realities of life. He will share with you his experiences of photographic successes as well as personal challenges and devastating losses. He believes in finding balance between your personal life and your photographic career. One cannot exclude the other. He will show you how his company continues to be profitable, fun to work at on a 4 day week. He will challenge you to remove yourself from working "in" your business to working "on" your business. Who are the people in your life that contribute to your success, what are you doing to stay "on top" of the digital wave? What is your exit strategy? How to negotiate around "no". Where are you spending your time in your business and home? Are you really accomplishing the best that you can? Find out from Dave how he balances his passion for on going photographic learning and the harmony of life.

JOEL ROSS:

Is there too much month at the end of your money? Is the studio you set out to run taking over your life? Joel Ross will take practical steps to address these and other common challenges most of us photographers face.

Joel Ross has been involved in the photographic industry for 11 years. Receiving his B.Ed at the University of Winnipeg, he has successfully pursued his dreams of a prosperous business balanced with a happy family life.

Achieving the Registered Professional Photographer status in 2000, he has been active in the photography community, most recently serving on the board of the Professional Photographer's Association of Manitoba.

Having transitioned entirely to digital technology almost 3 years ago, Joel and his team provide wedding photography services to well over 100 couples per year, both on a local and international level.

Together with his wife and business partner, he has reorganized his business to make more time and money for his family and teammates, at the same time as developing the largest studio in the province.

Armed with the experience of leading his "mom and pop" business into a fine tuned organization, he wants to share his business development process with you.

MAURIZIO MARCATO:

Maurizio Marcato runs one of Italy’s largest and most complex photographic studios, with 18 employees. He talks abut the balance he has struck between his passion and his profession. Maurizio has always had an unbridled love for images; he began with drawing and painting, which he still adores. In order to have the economic freedom necessary for his personal research he found himself forced to enter into the system, selling his capacity to create images.

MASSIMO LOVATI:

As an explorer of reality Massimo Lovati doesn’t cross forest or deserts but ordinary everyday places; above all that very famous yet mysterious universe that is sport…all sports, covered in long and distinguished career. This modern Marco Polo portrays his subjects with complete openness, learning to know and love the sport he photographs.

FRANCESCO CITO:

One of Italy’s most important photoreporters. In 1980, after the Soviet invasion, he was one of the first photographers to secretly reach Afghanistan, travelling 1200 km on foot with various groups of guerillas. At various stages from 1983 to 1989 he was on the Lebanese front as a correspondent from the Epoca newspaper. In 1996 he won the first prize at the World Press Photo Contest for his reportage of the Palio in Siena. For three years he worked as a wedding photographer in his native city, Naples, documenting the contrast between the sumptuous Neapoletan weddings and the urban and social degradation of the surroundings. Cito joined those processions, partook in those banquets and witnessed those dress fittings with his black-and-white eye. In his conference Cito discusses his approach to wedding photography which is so unusual yet at the same time usual.

ONNIK PAMBAKIAN:

Founding partner and administrator of Image Consult Ltd, a company whose main aim is professional imaging consultancy and education. This course on digital colour management has a limited number of places for advanced digital photographers. Part of the course includes the simulation of shooting situations and postproduction on the digital workstation. The typical process which images should undergo before printing will also be shown. The limits of non-profiled workflows will be shown along with solutions; there will also be the profiling of a hypothetical photography studio using equipment available to all.

BERT BEHNKE:

Bert Behnke has been involved in the photographic profession for almost thirty years. As a second generation photographer, he has seen and done almost everything in photography. His parents established the business in the Chicago area in1956, and ran it until Bert purchased the studio in 1985. When he purchased the studio, it had twelve employees and included a full service photographic lab. Bert decided to change the direction and only continued the portrait/wedding side of the business.

In 1991, Bert took on a partner and wife in Cindy. Together they changed the direction of the studio to concentrate on the portrait photography only, eventually phasing out the wedding business. Today, they have built their dream studio which is incorporated into their home and is located on two acres of wooded property. Many of their outdoor portrait sessions are done right at their place.

Bert was awarded the Master of Photography and Photographic Craftsman from the Professional Photographers of America (PPA). He also served as President of the 14,000 member PPA in 1997-1998. He currently serves as President of the World Council of Professional Photographers. In 2000, he was recognized as the Portrait Photographer of the Year by the International Photographic Council, a non-profit branch of the United Nations.

Bert has lectured on the portrait photography business all across America and has been invited to meet with fellow photographers in Mexico, Venezuela and Italy.

Born in 1964, he has been a professional photographer since 1989. In 1991 he became set up his own studio and in 2001 he obtained the QEP for reportage.
He works mainly as a wedding photographer and he tries to apply the language of photography he loves most: social photography and portraiture.
Postproduction of his shoots and the consequent search for suitable materials and methods of quality have led him to consider the importance of the context in which images are shown. Henri Cartier Bresson said that in reportage ".. a good photograph only has the place and date recorded underneath”. Today it is perhaps possible to go further still, accompanying images with something which interacted with us in that moment and in that place. From this research came various exhibitons in Italy and abroad, some of which will be present in Orvieto.

LADISLAV KAMARAD(QEP photographer of the year):

Ladislav is a passionate photographer of pure nature. He has photographed the world’s wildest and purest places and is the only photographer to have worked with Hasselblad equipment above 8000 metres without the aid of oxygen tanks.
